What Do Progressive Christians Believe?

At The Inclusive Christian, we embrace a faith that is rooted in Progressive Christianity. But what do Progressive Christians believe? It’s a faith tradition that is both ancient and evolving—grounded in Scripture (a.k.a. the Bible), yet ever open to the ongoing movement of God’s Spirit. We believe Progressive Christianity offers a thoughtful, inclusive alternative to exclusionary and fear-based religious system

Here’s what we believe:

  • God’s love is for all—no exceptions.
We believe God’s love is boundless and inclusive, extending to all people, no matter their background, identity, or past. In Christ, there are no outsiders. So everyone is welcome at the table. We are all part of the family of God—because God said so, and that’s enough.
  • Faith is meant to be explored, not restricted.
Faith is a journey, not a destination. It should lead to liberation, not control. We believe God invites us to ask questions, to doubt, and to wrestle with life’s biggest mysteries. Questions are holy, and doubt, rather than any kind of weakness, is a valuable part of the process of growing deeper in faith. This is why we believe faith should always be reforming—constantly evolving, open to rethinking and revisiting our understanding of God and Scripture.
  • Jesus’ message was radically inclusive.
Jesus didn’t just preach love. He lived it in ways that broke down barriers of race, gender, social status, and more. What’s more, he invited the marginalized to the center of God’s love. His message of radical inclusion is at the core of who we are as Christians. So if we want to follow Jesus, we must be willing to challenge our own assumptions, question systems of exclusion, and embrace a love that has no boundaries.
  • Christianity should inspire love, justice, and transformation, not fear or exclusion.
Jesus’s mission wasn’t about fear or control, but about radical love and restorative justice. That’s why Progressive Christianity calls us to be a force for good in the world: to advocate for justice, challenge oppression, and participate in the healing of creation. When Christianity becomes a tool of power or control, it loses the heart of the gospel.
  • Scripture is inspired—but not inerrant.
We believe the Bible is a sacred library, not a rulebook. It’s full of diverse voices, historical contexts, and even contradictions—and through it all, it points to the unfolding story of God’s love. We honor the Bible as inspired, while also acknowledging the human fingerprints all over it.
  • Love is the point.
At The Inclusive Christian, we believe love is the ultimate goal. Not doctrine. Not dogma. Not dominance. Love. Full stop.
